About Dr. Ivan Urits
Ivan Urits, MD is an interventional pain physician who is board certified in Anesthesiology and in Pain Medicine by the American Board of Anesthesiology. He earned his medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine. He then completed his anesthesia residency and his interventional pain medicine fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. He holds active medical licenses in Massachusetts and Rhode Island and a DEA registration.
Dr. Urits has an unusually large body of published work for a physician at his career stage. He has authored or co-authored 412 PubMed-indexed publications, 15 additional peer-reviewed journal articles, and 13 book chapters. He has edited three textbooks: the Cambridge Handbook of Pain Medicine (Cambridge University Press, 2023), Interventional Management of Migraines and Other Headache Disorders (Elsevier, 2024), and Outpatient Opioid Prescribing for Chronic Pain: Essentials of Safe and Effective Treatment (Springer, 2025). His research covers the issues that come up most often in litigation: spinal cord stimulation and neuromodulation, CRPS, opioid prescribing and urine drug testing, complications of interventional procedures, regional anesthesia and nerve blocks, airway management and intubation injuries, perioperative complications, and obstetric anesthesia. He has also served as a section editor, associate editor, and editorial board member for peer-reviewed journals, so he knows from the inside how medical evidence is evaluated.
He is also a teacher. During residency he supervised and instructed medical students and junior residents in induction, intubation, and airway management. He taught ultrasound-guided regional techniques in resident workshops and as an instructor in a Harvard Medical School CME course.
As an expert, Dr. Urits works with both plaintiff and defense attorneys. He reviews standard of care in anesthesiology and pain medicine, including care given by non-physician providers such as nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) and nurse practitioners. He also gives opinions on causation, medical necessity, and the need for and cost of future care. His approach is thorough and even-handed, and he explains clearly the reasons behind each opinion. He tells counsel early and candidly what the medicine shows, and he presents complex procedures in plain language that judges and juries can follow.

How Dr. Urits forms his opinions
Dr. Urits builds each opinion to withstand scrutiny. Every opinion is grounded in:
• a complete review of the records provided, including procedure notes, anesthesia records, monitoring data, medication administration records, imaging, and depositions;
• the peer-reviewed literature and recognized clinical guidelines in anesthesiology and pain medicine;
• generally accepted diagnostic criteria and methods; and
• his subspecialty training, board certifications, teaching, and published research.
He states the basis and the limits of each opinion and does not give opinions outside his expertise. His work is designed to meet the reliability standards of Federal Rule of Evidence 702 and comparable state standards.
